Image  Amsab-ISH brings its digital collections online in Europeana through an ambitious new European project called Heritage of the People's Europe (HOPE)

HOPE is a European project that will run for three years and is being carried out by a consortium consisting of 13 partners from 10 countries. The project will gather 3 million digital objects from social history archives in a central digital repository, and deliver the metadata to the grand European digital library Europeana.

Amsab-ISH is one of the six so-called 'work package leaders' of the project. The work package led by Amsab-ISH will collect information on metadata, processes and formats, and create a manual on the best practices to be applied. Amsab-ISH has raised a five man strong research team that will start working on the project from 1 May onwards, led by director dr. Geert Van Goethem and coordinated by dr. Donald Weber.

HOPE will be one of Europeana's 'aggregators', networks of European cultural institutions that deliver cultural historical heritage to the European digital library. The project is being supported by the federation of social history archives IALHI, of which Amsab-ISG is a member. Project manager is the International Institute of Social History (IISG) of Amsterdam. The HOPE partners are:

  • Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (Netherlands)
  • Amsab-Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (Belgium)
  • Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro (Italy)
  • Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (Germany)
  • Fundação Mário Soares (Portugal)
  • Schweizerisches Sozialarchiv (Switzerland)
  • Työväen Arkisto (Finland)
  • Verein für Geschichte der Arbeiterbewegung (Austria)
  • Nyílt Társadalom Archívum (Hungary)
  • Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione (Italy)
  • Stichting European Digital Library (Netherlands)
  • Centre d'Histoire Sociale du XXe Siècle (France)
  • Génériques (France)

More information will be available once the project's website is up and running.
